What is an AI voice agent?
An AI voice agent is software that holds a phone conversation — listening, understanding, and speaking back in real time — to do a job a person would otherwise do on the phone.
How an AI voice agent works on a phone call
The call comes in over an ordinary phone line. Speech is turned to text as the person speaks, a language model decides what to say next from a pitch it was given, and text is turned back into a voice. The whole loop runs in under a second on a good connection, and about one to two seconds on a basic one. Everything the agent may claim comes from a list a person approved; everything it says is recorded and scored afterwards.
AI voice agent vs IVR vs voice bot
An IVR is a menu: press one for sales. A voice bot is a menu that understands words instead of keypresses. An AI voice agent holds an open conversation — it can be interrupted, it can answer an objection, it can decide to stop. The difference shows up in the first ten seconds and in whether the person hangs up.
What an AI voice agent should never do
Claim to be human. Continue after somebody asks it to stop. Claim anything it was not taught. Argue. Call outside legal hours. Use background noise to suggest a room full of people. Every one of these is a choice by whoever built it, and each is the kind of thing a regulator asks about first.
How to tell if an AI voice agent is any good
Ask for a transcript of a bad call, not a good one. Ask what happens when somebody says “stop calling me”. Ask what it does when it does not know the answer. Ask whether you can read every call, and whether you can change what it says without a developer. A vendor who cannot show you a bad call has not looked at many.
