AI phone answering after hours: what to expect
An AI receptionist answers when nobody is there, books what it was taught to book, transfers what it must, and takes a message for the rest. The useful version never speculates.
What an AI receptionist can answer
Anything it was taught, and only that: hours, location, what you do, what things cost, how to book. It answers from an approved list of facts, and when the question is outside it, it says so.
What it should refuse to answer
Anything clinical, anything legal, anything financial about a specific account, and anything it was not told. The right answer to those is “I will have somebody call you back” — and then actually doing it.
Transfer, message, or book: the decision
Book if the caller wants a slot and one exists. Transfer if a person is available and the caller asks for one, or if the caller is upset. Take a message for everything else, with a callback time the caller chooses.
Setting business hours and the fallback
Inside hours, transfer to a person is real. Outside them, transfer means voicemail, so the receptionist should not offer it — it should take a message and say when somebody will call.
