What is an AI SDR, and does it work?
An AI SDR is a voice or text agent that does the top of the sales funnel — calling leads, qualifying them, and booking meetings for a human closer. It works for the calls that are the same every time, and fails for the ones that are not.
What an AI SDR actually does on a call
It introduces itself as an AI, states who it is calling for, asks whether now is a fair moment, asks two or three qualifying questions, answers the objection it was taught, and asks for a meeting. It does not close, negotiate, or discuss price beyond a line it was given. The output is a booked meeting or a clear reason there was not one.
Where AI SDRs fail
On anything that needs judgement: a prospect with an unusual situation, a negotiation, a relationship that already exists. On lists that should not have been called in the first place. And on latency — a two-second pause before every answer reads as robotic on a sales call in a way it does not on a reminder.
AI SDR vs hiring an SDR
A person is better at rapport, at reading the room, at the call that goes somewhere unexpected. An AI is better at the four hundred calls that are the same, at never forgetting the pitch, at working evenings, and at leaving a record of every word. The honest use is both: the AI does the volume and hands the live ones to the person.
How to measure an AI SDR honestly
Meetings booked per hundred connected calls, and how many of those meetings were kept. Not dials, not minutes, not “conversations”. If a vendor reports activity rather than outcomes, ask why.
